Land hockey is one of the oldest & most popular sports in the world and has been an Olympic discipline since 1908.
English students brought hockey to Switzerland around 1900.
The first game on Swiss soil is said to have been played in a girls' boarding school in 1902. The Swiss Land Hockey Association, which was renamed Swiss Hockey in 2015, was founded in 1919 (www.swisshockey.org). Today there are 19 clubs throughout Switzerland with around 1,700 active players.
In the world rankings, the men's national team is 34th and the women's 38th (as of December 2019). The dominant nations are the women's teams from Australia, the Netherlands, Argentina and Germany and the men's teams from Belgium, the Netherlands, India, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and England.
In the hall, the Swiss national team is currently among the top 10 teams in the world rankings: the men are in 8th place and the women are 7th (as of December 2019).
